Emmanuel Ekpor

PhD Candidate

Emmanuel joined the ACBRD as a PhD candidate in 2025, awarded joint scholarship support by Deakin University and the diaTribe Foundation. His PhD research will focus on understanding and addressing diabetes stigma among adults with type 2 diabetes in healthcare settings. He is primarily supervised by Prof. Jane Speight with support from Dr Elizabeth Holmes-Truscott (associate supervisor) and Matthew Garza (dStigmatize Stigma Program Manager; external supervisor). 

Before pursuing his PhD, Emmanuel worked as a registered general nurse in Ghana, where his passion for improving healthcare outcomes for individuals with diabetes was ignited. He co-founded the Diabetes in Africa Knowledge Integration Network (DAKIN), where he leads innovative research efforts aimed at advancing diabetes management and care across Africa.

Emmanuel’s research has garnered international recognition: He has published 15+ peer-reviewed articles, accumulated over 400 citations on Google Scholar, and has been referenced in influential works, including the International Consensus Statement on Ending Diabetes Stigma (led by the ACBRD) and the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Care in Diabetes.
